Specifications: Simply insert a GSM sim card into the GPS unit. Whenever you call the unit it will respond with the coordinates of its location thru a SMS message. You can then use these coordinates on any mapping software (for example Google Earth) which will show where exactly the unit is located. This Cutting-Edge GPS tracker is designed for advanced tracking/monitoring, especially for vehicle tracking using GPS, GSM and GPRS technology. The GPS tracker is designed for use in any vehicle to track it's location, such as cars, trucks, boats, motor homes, vans and construction machinery and many more - the live tracking possibilities are limitless! This is particularly useful if your vehicle, pets, child or your belongings have been stolen.
In general, Garmin is dominant in the usa and has been dominant in; both share the disadvantages common to all gps devices, and neither is dramatically better than the other. Having said that, I have one of each and though I usually keep the Garmin in NYC and the Tomtom in, I have used each in both countries. My sense is that for providing inter-city directions they both are extremely useful but share a tendency to route you through some incredibly snarky tiny roads that the gps deems more direct in situations where, as is often true in rural, there is no highway. Within Budapest the changes to traffic patterns caused by the widespread construction projects downtown have rendered all gps maps continually out of date for the past couple of years. For sights and foot traffic, our guests have found them to be of marginal value at best. Bring it, use it, carry maps as well and don't simply give yourself over to the gps. Trace it's proposed route on your maps, so if you need to detour you understand when, where, and why it happens.
I've used Garmin in a few times.my thoughts: 1) You almost certainly need to purchase European maps that will likely run you $100-$150 dollars. 2) Due to the cavernous nature of large cities, the GPS will be of marginal value for walking. 3) I find that unlike much of the US, there is no consistency in street names. Streets change names every block, which makes the usage of paper maps very tough.
Like John said, if you have the maps bring them but don't fully rely on them. If you don't already have them, weigh how much you'll be driving with the cost of the maps. If you're just driving to and from Balaton, I don't see the maps being worth it. Hi TS, A couple reiterations of the above posts: 1. I would NOT drive in. Yes, renting a car to go to Balaton is fine, but once you're planning on staying in Budapest - do as CP suggests and DUMP THE CAR.
No need for a car in Budapest. Public transportation is extensive, relatively reasonable (multi-day passes) if not a bit crusty around the edges. Driving from Budapest to Balaton is.simple. One highway, well marked. I don't think I would invest in purchasing the additional maps. Save the $100+ and enjoy some additional beverages and good eats. A couple of notes about driving here.
First, make sure your rental car has a highway sticker. If it doesn't you can buy one from most gas stations before you get on the highway.
The sticker system is Hungary's way of tolls. And note - I buy an annual pass and no longer receive a sticker. I do not know how it works for shorter period stickers. While better than previous times, the drivers are extremely aggressive.
Do yourself a favor and hang out in the right lane as much as possible and let the idiots zoom past you. The speed limit is 80, but most exceed it and some by a large margin. Just use common sense while driving and watch your rear view mirror for approaching idiots.
